Histology
Histology is the study of the microscopic structure of the body. Our histology laboratory provides a diagnostic service throughout our hospitals, and for local GPs for NHS and private consultations. We also welcome specimens from other healthcare providers subject to prior agreement.
Our laboratory process tissue samples from surgical procedures to ensure an accurate diagnosis of underlying disease.
- Samples can be received fixed in formalin for optimal preservation prior to laboratory testing.
- Frozen sections are also available by prior booking which gives a rapid initial result to clinicians.
- OSNA for sentinel lymph node analysis for breast cancer cases (Please note these should be received at the laboratory, fresh and within 15 minutes of removal at surgery).
The samples can have a variety of tests undertaken to diagnose a range of underling disease. This is especially important in sub typing tumours for more effective cancer management in a patient pathway.

Our laboratory is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.

Mortuary
Our mortuary provides a caring and dignified service for the deceased. Mortuary services are provided to the community, hospital, county council, home office forensic and coroner services.
