Management of HYPERglycaemia via a pen

Common causes of HYPERglycaemia:

  • Illness
  • Missed or insufficient doses of insulin
  • Eating too much carbohydrate
  • Excitement/stress

Signs & Symptoms:

  • Feeling thirsty/dehydrated
  • Feeling tired/weak
  • Feeling hungry
  • Increased need to pass urine
  • Headache

Test for Blood Ketones on your ketone meter  when:

  • Blood glucose level is more than 14mmol/l twice in a row
  • Child may not be feeling unwell. If unwell follow sick day rules advice sheet
