Speech and language therapy

We assess and treat children and young people with specific speech, language, communication, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties. This helps them to communicate and participate in daily activities to the best of their ability.

Who we work with

Children and young people from 0 to 19 years in community clinics, homes, early years settings including family centres and mainstream schools. We focus on upskilling parents and those in educational settings to maximise children’s progress in their daily communicative environment.

We offer 30-minute online sessions with one of our therapists to:

  • discuss your concerns
  • get information around development and support
  • advice and next steps tailored to the child’s needs.

Our therapist will explain how to write the advice directly into the child’s SEND support plan. Where possible, we highly recommend that parents and staff from the preschool or nursery setting join the same virtual call to share information.

We’ll send an email for the same meeting to anyone wanting to attend.

Parental consent

If you want to discuss a specific child without parents present, you must get consent from the parents prior to the session.

Education staff who support children and young people from reception upwards. We strongly encourage parent/carer(s) to attend to ensure collaborative working.

When a child or young person’s in an educational setting, it’s compulsory for a member of education staff to attend the appointment, alongside parent/carer(s) if they’re joining too.

Parents/carer(s) who support a child or young person who is electively home educated can access the school advice clinic.

How long does an appointment last?

Approximately 30 minutes per child or young person. The appointments take place online via Microsoft Teams.

How do I get an appointment?

Complete the formSchool advice clinic request form, including as much information as possible.

Step 1

Indicate on the form if your child or young person can’t access these or is electively home educated so we can still offer you an appointment. You’ll find prompts on the request form to support you in providing relevant information.

Step 2

Email the completed form to buc-tr.cyptherapies@nhs.net with ‘SLT School Advice Clinic appointment’ in the subject line of your email.

You can state time preferences and we’ll try to accommodate these requests. Once received our team will review it and send a Microsoft Teams appointment to you.
