Preparing your skin for a caesarean

Read our guide below about how to prepare your skin for a caesarean.

You can also download a PDF version of this patient information by following the link on the right.

Why do I need to do this?

This will help to prevent any infection at the site of your caesarean surgery.

What will I need?

We’ll give you wash cloths before your caesarean section. If you develop any signs of skin irritation or allergy, stop using the product and get medical attention immediately.

If you have any questions, please ask your midwife.

Octenisan wash mitts

Clinell wash gloves

When should I use the wash gloves/mitts?

The night before and on the morning of your caesarean. Shower before using the gloves/mitts.

You’ll have a sticky residue on your skin whilst drying but this will disappear once dry. Don’t wash or wipe the area.

Bring the rest of the pack into hospital on the day of your caesarean and use them while you get ready for theatre.

Can I re-use the gloves?

No. Each glove is for single use. There are 8 gloves in each packet.

How to use the gloves/mitts

Step 1

Wash your hands.

Step 2

Open the packet and take out one glove at a time.

Step 3

Use one glove to clean your chest and tummy.

Step 4

Use a second glove around your groin to avoid mucous membranes as it can be irritating.

Step 5

Use a third glove/mitt for your right arm and armpit.

Step 6

Use a fourth glove to clean your left arm and armpit.

Step 7

Throw the gloves/mitts away. Don’t reuse them.

Step 8

Wash your hands.

How can I help reduce healthcare associated infections?

Infection prevention and control is important to the wellbeing of our patients so we have procedures in place. Keeping your hands clean is an effective way of preventing the spread of infections.

You, and anyone visiting you, must use the hand sanitiser available at the entrance to every ward before coming in and after you leave. You may need to wash your hands at the sink using soap and water. Hand sanitisers are not suitable for dealing with patients who have symptoms of diarrhoea.
