Physical needs

Here you can find out how to help your child move towards greater independence. Having identified particular functional difficulties you can access the downloadable resources and useful web links opposite. These have a range of activities and strategies to help address the problems.

Generally a number of options will be available so that you can choose the ones best suited to your child and your family.

Specific strategies

Your child may be struggling with a specific skill such as handwriting or dressing. These strategies can help them to achieve their potential and gain confidence to move forward.

Advice could cover issues such as:

  • Dressing
  • Cutlery and mealtimes
  • Self-care
  • Organisation and planning
  • Attention and concentration
  • Handwriting
  • Scissor skills

Accessing OT support

If your child has not been seen by an OT before, you can access support via the OT School Advice Clinic Service offered to all mainstream schools throughout Buckinghamshire. Please ask your school’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCo) for further details.

If after trying these strategies for the recommended period of time your child continues to struggle, please complete the referral form on the home page in full and send it to us. Alternatively simply contact us for further advice.

Parent talks

The Occupational Therapists offer talks to any parents over the three cluster sites.  The topics covered include: 'tips for enhancing fine and gross motor skills', 'tips for developing handwriting skills' and 'understanding sensory techniques and the ‘Alert Principle.'

Please click here, or on the poster image below, to find the appropriate talk and date to book a place.
