About us

The National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) is the oldest, and one of the largest  spinal injuries centres in the world. The NSIC is the only CARF accredited spinal injuries unit in the UK.

In 1948, Professor Guttmann began using sport as a vital ingredient in rehabilitation programmes and on 29 July organised a competition for 16 paralysed men and women to coincide with the opening ceremony of the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

The Stoke Mandeville Games for wheelchair athletes began and was widely seen as the moment that the Paralympic movement was born.

Why we need your help?

The management of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is complex. The NSIC treats 30% of the patients with spinal cord injury nationally and is recognised internationally as providing the best  outcomes for patients  which enhance their quality of life  and ability to participate in society.

Every year we  need  to replace or purchase additional  equipment, to ensure we  provide the best environment for patients and staff and take advantage of technical advances to deliver better care to our patients.
