IWD2022: How a consultant surgeon is breaking unconscious bias

Date: 09/03/2022 | Category: News 2022

“As a consultant surgeon, I am proud to be a part of #IWD.  I have been fortunate to have worked professionally in Europe, The Middle East and Asia, and I have witnessed how women’s strengths cross all global barriers and disciplines.

“In leading the introduction of Appreciative Inquiry and embedding the philosophy into our daily practice, this has allowed us to challenge preconceived ideas and unconscious bias. We have encouraged innovative changes by highlighting positive moments at the beginning of each operating list to encourage best practices to flourish, flatten the hierarchy, and strengthen cross-team collaboration. By focussing on positive changes, rather than troubling incidents, we have sustainable patient outcomes, consistent team performance and excellent patient feedback.

“I believe that celebrating women’s achievements and promoting an equitable and inclusive environment does not void the achievements of others; rather, it is everyone’s responsibility to forge gender parity, advocate equality and challenge stereotypes and bias as they occur.  It is therefore a pleasure to be a part of this year’s #BreakTheBias #IWD2022.”
