Accident and emergency (A+E)

We are redeveloping our A&E department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital to ensure our facilities and environment continue to meet the needs of our population. Building works will be taking place over the coming months which may affect access and parking on our site. Clear signposting and parking controllers will be in place to help guide visitors. We deliver emergency and acute care to all patients who arrive in the A+E department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

The inpatient speciality teams aim to ensure that any patient who attends is assessed and managed appropriately.

Care in an emergency

In an emergency go straight to an A+E department or dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.

Your GP can also advise you on the most appropriate service for your needs or you can call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Offers a full range of accident and emergency care, as well as emergency surgery. Injuries and conditions including:

severe head injuries
heavy bleeding following injury
severe fractures and broken bones
severe burns and all facial burns
stomach pain
severe chest pains
respiratory problems
loss of consciousness
overdoses/poisoning
simple fractures
cuts and bruises
sprains and strains
bites and stings
minor scalds and minor burns
infected wounds
all minor injuries.

Please note Wycombe and Amersham hospitals do not offer any emergency care. A GP-led Minor Injuries and Illness Unit (MIIU) is available on the Wycombe Hospital site.

Examples of when our emergency services should not be used:

coughs and colds - most people are best to stay at home or see their local pharmacist
old injuries or problems - can be dealt with by your GP in the first instance
queries about your medication - can be dealt with by your GP or pharmacist
second opinion or can't get a GP appointment until the next day - your GP is the most appropriate place
