Makaton training sessions for professionals and parents
These sessions take place online. You’ll need to book in advance.
What will I need to join the sessions?
A computer, laptop or tablet with a working camera, microphone and a stable internet connection. We only recommend using smartphones if you don’t have an alternative available.
You must book your space to join the training.
Makaton training is structured into 4 different levels.
Who is level 1 for?
It’s for parents, family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home/work.
For schools, we recommend that you attend levels 1 and 2.
What does level 1 include?
Level 1 covers a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme. It covers the signs and symbols from stages 1 and 2 of the core vocabulary plus some of the additional stage.
You’ll learn:
- tips for effective signing/symbol use
- how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work
- how to use and apply Makaton to develop the communication skills of others.
Level 1 training dates
You must attend both modules.
Module 1 – Wednesday 30 April, 9.30am to 1.30pm OR Wednesday 24th September 2025, 9.30am to 1.30pm
Module 2 – Tuesday 6 May, 9.30am to 1.30pm OR Tuesday 30 September 2025, 9.30am to 1.30pm
Who is level 2 for?
It’s for anyone who has already done level 1.
What does level 2 include?
It builds on the knowledge you learned in level 1. You’ll cover the signs and symbols from stages 3 and 4 of the core vocabulary plus the rest of the additional stage.
Level 2 training dates
You must attend both modules.
Module 3 – Wednesday 11 June, 9.30am to 1.30pm OR Wednesday 12 November, 9.30am to 1.30pm
Module 4 – Wednesday 18 June 2025, 9.30am to 1.30pm OR Tuesday 18th November, 9.30am to 1.30pm
Who is level 3 for?
It’s for anyone who has already done level 2.
What does level 3 include?
It builds on the knowledge you learned in levels 1 and 2. You’ll cover the signs and symbols from stages 5 and 6 of the core vocabulary.
Level 3 also helps you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills to use them effectively every day.
Level 3 training dates
You must attend both modules.
Module 5 – Wednesday 2 July, 9.30am to 1.30pm
Module 6 – Tuesday 8 July, 9.30am to 1.30pm
Who is level 3 for?
It’s for anyone who has already done level 2.
What does level 3 include?
It builds on the knowledge you learned in levels 1 and 2. You’ll cover the signs and symbols from stages 5 and 6 of the core vocabulary.
Level 3 also helps you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills to use them effectively every day.

Module 6 – Tuesday 8 July, 9.30am to 1.30pm

It’s for anyone who has already done level 3.

It builds on the knowledge you learned in levels 1 to 3. You’ll cover the signs and symbols from stages 7 and 8 of the core vocabulary.
Level 4 training completes the core vocabulary.
Level 3 training dates
You must attend both modules.
Module 7 – Wednesday 8 October 2025, 9.30am to 1.30pm.
Module 8 – Tuesday 14 October 2025, 9.30am – 1.30pm.
Costs
This includes manuals and technical support if you need it.
Parents, £35
Professionals, £85.
You can book levels 1 and 2 together, or levels 3 and 4 together for a discount – parents £60, professionals £155.
