About this Ward/Department

The Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit (AECU) is providing urgent diagnostics and treatment for patients not requiring admission to hospital. It is open daily 8:00-20:30 hours. AECU is consultant led in normal working hours and has consultant supervision out of normal working hours, supported by a team of junior doctors and senior nurses. Patients need to fulfil certain criteria to be accepted into AECU to ensure clinical safety. Some patients might need to attend AECU on several occasions to complete their diagnostics and or treatments to avoid hospital admission. AECU works closely with GPs, the Emergency Department, the ambulance services, the Medical Day Unit and the Frailty Service.
