Accident and Emergency
Ward/Department Name
Accident and Emergency (A&E) or the Emergency Department (ED)
About this Ward/Department
We see patients who need emergency and acute care due to accidents, injuries and life-threatening conditions. We have 2 specialist areas:
- Ambulatory emergency care unit (AECU)
We manage a large number of emergency adult patients on the same day which often means avoiding hospital admission. You might come to the unit via A&E or as a referral from your GP for a variety of diagnostic assessments or procedures. We may offer you a follow-up if needed.
- Assessment and observation unit (AOU)
AOU is a 26 bed unit near to A&E. It’s for rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment with the aim of patient turnaround within 24 hours or less. If you need to stay longer, we’ll transfer you to the short stay ward or one of our specialist wards depending on your clinical needs.
Most patients need a further assessment by our multidisciplinary REACT team for a safe and early discharge.
