Children’s FeNO and Spirometry tests
What is FeNO?
FeNO (Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide) is a way to check for inflammation in the airways. You’ll be asked to breathe in fully through a mouthpiece like a straw and then blow out gently.
What is Spirometry?
Spirometry is a way of checking your lungs to see how much air they can hold and how fast you can blow this air out. We will check this before and after a dose of salbutamol (blue inhaler).
Why do we need to check this?
Spirometry can help your GP to decide whether you have asthma and how best to treat your symptoms.
Can I practice before my appointment?
You could try blowing pieces of scrunched up paper using a straw. You should try to blow out as hard and as fast as you can for as long as you can.
Can I watch a video to show me what to expect?
Yes. Please follow these links to videos about FeNO and spirometry:
