Carole Last - Ward support
After the WRVS tea bar closed at Wycombe hospital in 2011, I had the opportunity to fill a voluntary administrative support position in HR. In addition, in 2012 I started volunteering in the day surgery unit and for the meet and greet service, which culminated in unexpectedly, being made volunteer of the year in 2013. In 2017 I also started volunteering for the Voluntary Services department helping and supporting students find their way to their placements. I very much enjoy the voluntary work I do and hope it makes people's visit to the hospital just a little bit better.
June Cartwright - A&E buddy
I started as a volunteer 6 months ago as an A&E buddy. I was a bit apprehensive about how I would fit into the busy medical environment as my working career had been office-based. At first it felt a bit strange but Karen (infection prevention and control clinical assistant) was a great support to me and all the staff are very helpful and friendly, so once I had found my way around, I felt much more relaxed and confident and now I feel very much a part of the team. I love meeting new people and it is so rewarding to bring a smile to someone's face by just talking to them and giving them a cup of tea, especially when they are so vulnerable. Patients are always so thankful for any help they are given. Many patients have told me that they think having A&E buddies is a really good idea, as having someone to talk to really helps pass the time. I really enjoy what I do and go home with a good feeling that I helped someone feel better. I chose to volunteer at Stoke Mandeville Hospital because my family have called upon the services of the hospital over the years and received excellent treatment, so it is always nice to be able to give something back. The atmosphere at Stoke Mandeville Hospital is very friendly and I feel privileged to be working with such lovely people who do a great job.
Janice Phillpott-Evans - Welcome team (meet and greet)
I have been a meet and greet volunteer for 3 years. I work around the reception area, meeting patients, directing or taking them to their appointments, answering any queries, listening to troubles, helping with complaints and booking transport. I also help welcome people to the chaplaincy and give batteries for hearing aids. For me it is important to greet people with a smile, to be patient and understanding. Through volunteering I have made friends with other volunteers and staff. Everyone is friendly and helpful to us.
