Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has four community inpatient wards: Waterside, Chartridge and the Buckinghamshire Neuro Rehab Unit which are all in Amersham Hospital, and also a ward in Buckingham Community Hospital.
The challenges of providing safe, effective care in the community hospitals were identified by the Care Quality Commission. To address the situation the decision was been taken to temporarily close Chartridge Ward and to consolidate staff into Waterside Ward. As part of the review we engaged with current and recent patients of Waterside and Chartridge Wards to ensure their views inform the development of the future model of care.

PLACE is a national programme of patient led assessments of the care environment for NHS organisations that provide inpatient care. It is an annual process which usually runs across a two to three month period from approximately March – May. Patients/ carers/ members of the public are asked to undertake a joint assessment with staff against a structured framework. The aim of the programme is to place the patient view at the centre of an assurance and quality improvement process, hence the majority of assessors are patients/ carers. Patients/carers/member of the publics input feeds into results which are published annually in a way that helps to normalise standards across the NHS and locally.
