Celebrating 80 years of the NSIC and Paralympics 2024

Patients, families, friends and staff celebrated over the weekend to mark 80 years of the National Spinal Injuries Centre and the lighting of the torch for this year’s Paralympics on Saturday 24 August.

The celebrations kicked off with a 24-hour Table Tennis-a-thon at 4pm Friday 23 August. A collaborative effort by patients, friends and staff kept up the table-tennis through the night. The event culminated in a Bake-off competition and a street food party on Saturday afternoon.

Cakes submitted to the competition were judged on the interpretation of the themes – either 80th birthday or Paralympics – before the all-important taste test. Entries were then sold off slice by slice with all proceeds going to charity to support the NSIC.

Everyone who attended the event also enjoyed an array of street food from around the world, ahead of the final table tennis match.

Thanks to all those who supported the event in the Oasis Café and National Spinal Injuries Centre foyer at Stoke Mandeville Hospital by taking a table tennis shift, baking and decorating a cake, sharing a local dish, donating to charity or just enjoying the day.

Special thanks to coaches Harry Fairchild and Wen Wei Xu from Brighton Table Tennis Club for making the journey to support the event, to Sodexo for donating soft drinks for the players across the 24-hour period and to Manhole Covers UK for donating the winner’s prize for the Bake-off.
