When coping with a difficult situation, we all often begin by trying to help ourselves, using our existing resources and coping strategies, and then turn to family, friends and staff members.
There can be many adjustments that need to take place in life following a spinal cord injury, but talking confidentially about worries and concerns can help patients gain a sense of control, helping them to cope and adjust to the future.
Counselling can be one opportunity to talk about practical issues such as losses, fears and anxieties in a private and confidential setting.
We also support people to manage those other problems that can occur as part of a spinal cord injury: problems with chronic pain; concerns about relationships and sexual life; problems with memory; and a variety of other issues.
Most people see a clinical psychologist at some point during their rehabilitation. The service is also available to partners and family members, as they too may be struggling to adjust to the changes in their life.
We have a range of booklets that have been specially written for people with spinal cord injury:
There is also a booklet covering support for children of adults with spinal cord injury - please contact the centre for a copy.
