30 May 2019
Recipients of CARE awards are invited to a special ceremony that’s a part of each public board meeting to collect their award from Neil Macdonald, Chief Executive. At the May 2019 Board meeting yesterday a list of recipients from right across all teams and departments within the Trust were recognised – it was wonderful to hear their citations and to see them with their friends, families, colleagues and supporters.
CARE award winners:
George Wallis - Foundation Year 1 Doctor
George always goes above and beyond his role to deliver great care. He walks onto the ward each day with a smile and is willing to make tea and to sit with patients who may be on their own at the end of their life.
Dorcia Allison - theatre support worker
Dorcia was a superstar of ‘operation cataract’ earlier this year when a Vanguard theatre unit was in place to tackle a backlog of cataract procedures. She put patients at ease and provided fabulous care. She was described by patients as ‘a credit to the department’ and deserves all the recognition and praise that many patients have sent in.
Alice Wilkins – radiographer and Jumana Hussain – radiologist
Jumana Hussain set up an urgent MRI scan for a child with cancer so the child would not lose the chance of a new treatment on a clinical trial. Alice Wilkins was on call elsewhere and came in specially to do the urgent MRI. They did their best so this child has the best possible chance of survival.
Jess Boult - colorectal and stoma specialist nurse
Jess was nominated by the wife of a patient who described her as having been “an immeasurable support over the past few weeks. She has listened to my worries with absolute patience and provided clear answers. Having encountered such incredible support from Jess has made this whole unfortunate experience bearable.”
Sheena Connington – children’s community nurse
While off duty and driving to a local garden centre, Sheena was flagged down by a distraught family, whose two year old had fallen into a pond and was struggling to breathe. Sheena provided CPR until the ambulance arrived. Her swift action kept the child alive with minimal health implications.
Geoff Darby – receptionist at the post graduate centre in Stoke Mandeville Hospital
Most BHT staff go in and out of the post grad centre either on a regular basis or now and again to attend the odd meeting – so he’s known to many in the Trust. His nomination states: “Geoff takes time to listen, time to get to know people. I am sure I am not the only one who walks away feeling much better about their day because they've spent a couple of minutes talking with Geoff. Don’t ever change, keep us all smiling.”
Fran Lucas - eye clinic admissions
Fran was nominated by a the daughter in law of a patient who spoke to Fran on a number of occasions about her mother in law’s admission for cataract surgery: “Fran was always polite and informative and did her best to help. After surgery she was still giving advice and helping me with an outpatient appointment even though it was not in her remit. She is an asset to the hospital’
Administration team sexual health
Nominated for an award by colleagues the team are described as great collaborators who: “provide an excellent first point of contact for our service users – they show respect and sensitivity. They take responsibility for the smooth running of our service and are a credit to the NHS.”
Sharon Howard – children’s occupational therapist and Laura Witherden - children’s physiotherapist
Sharon and Laura received their CARE award for demonstrating great dedication and commitment with regards to a particular family across a number of months. They did their upmost to keep safeguarding and the needs of the children at the forefront at all times.
Tenimol Binu - senior nurse ITU Wycombe
Tenimol was nominated by the daughter of a patient who said: “Tenimol looked after my mother with respect and compassion. She has a positive attitude towards her job and carries it out with a smile. She is a role model and inspiration for the NHS.”
Congratulations to all our winners, richly deserved recognition.
