Our unit is part of the department of general surgery and provides diagnostic and treatment services for benign and malignant breast conditions, which may present symptomatically or via the breast screening unit. Working closely with specialist breast radiology, diagnostics, oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery and with the support of breast care nurses, clinical psychologists, geneticists, lymphoedema specialists and many others, we provide an integrated, comprehensive and sympathetic breast care pathway.
Breast services are currently provided from both Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe hospitals although planning is now well advanced for a new, state-of-the-art, diagnostic centre. This will be based at a single site to optimise the sophisticated technology and expertise required to support both breast screening and symptomatic patient care.
Having introduced mobile breast screening many years before the introduction of the NHS Breast Screening Service (NHSBSS), our breast surgical unit has remained in the forefront of developments. With four consultant breast surgeons, all fully accredited in the latest techniques, the unit remains not only one of the largest in the UK but also amongst the most progressive.
