A new Minor Injuries and Illness Unit (MIIU) opens today (1 October) at Wycombe Hospital, providing a range of health services for those who have an injury or illness that is urgent but not life-threatening.
As well as assessing and treating patients, the new GP-led unit provides advice on self-care and on which health service to access (and when) in order to get the most effective, efficient treatment with the minimum amount of waiting time possible.
It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is run by advanced nurse practitioners, emergency nurse practitioners, GPs and administrative staff – providing the best possible care for patients.
Dr Geoff Payne, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire NHS Cluster Medical Director, said: “The opening of the MIIU at Wycombe Hospital is an important development in local health services, which aim to ensure people receive the right service, at the right place and the right time, every time.
“This unit is a vital part of a range of health services for local people. The most appropriate treatment may be through either self-care, a visit to a pharmacy, a GP appointment, out of hours call to a GP, the MIIU or, in life-threatening situations, through A&E.”
The new unit, which replaces the existing Emergency Medical Centre, deals with cuts and bruises, sprains and strains, bites and stings, suspected fractures, minor head injuries and a number of other minor illnesses and injuries.
Dr Kevin Barnett, Clinical Lead for Wycombe MIIU, said: “A wide range of organisations and individuals have worked really hard to ensure this vital aspect of local healthcare is in place and able to deliver the highest quality health services possible.”
These changes to local health services are the latest developments in the plans outlined in the Better Healthcare in Bucks consultation, which sets out changes to services at Wycombe Hospital and Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
